The Cottage: Just on the border of Connemara, this is a lovely little cottage, hidden away in its own little world. The cottage gives you stunning views of lough Corrib and the Maamturk Mountains. You also have views down to Castle Kirk Island. The castle, also known as Hens Castle, is considered to be the oldest fortress of its kind in Ireland. Now in ruins, you can still head out to the island, where the Office of Public works have rebuilt the first floor offering amazing views over the Corrib. (Siobhan, who owns Mayo & Connemara Coastal Cottages, has kayaked out to the island several times, and says it’s a great location for a picnic!).
This is the perfect location for enjoying both Mayo & Connemara, with both on your doorstep. Lough Corrib is a huge lake and a well-known fishing spot. There are numerous launching locations if you wanted to bring a boat along – parking space & storage available at the cottage. The mayfly season on the Corrib is world famous.
Just a short drive away you can also take on the challenge of the Maamturk Mountains. Or if you’re not in an adventurous mood, seat back, relax with a glass of wine and take in the views, with only the sheep and birds to listen too.
The villages of Leenane/Oughterard are about 15 mins away & Corr Na Mona about 3 mins.
