Usually a drop of rain in Connemara is ignored, and everyone puts on the wellies and waterproofs and heads out hoping it will dry later, but sometimes it is nice to spend a day doing something that doesn’t rely on the weather, so here are a few ideas.

Connemara Pony Museum
Clifden is a great place to spend a few hours, it has some very interesting shops, and a great choice of coffee shops and pubs for lunch or a cup of coffee. Clifden Bookshop has a great variety of local interest books and artist materials for kids and adults alike. The Station House Theatre and Cinema www.clifdenstationhouse.com always has something on, and there is a Connemara Pony Museum in the complex.
A very different and interesting way to pass a few hours is to sign up for a fused glass workshop at Connemara Blue

Connemara Creative Workshops
If you like artistic activity there is also a well-known local textile artist, Bernie Dignam, who runs workshops on a regular basis for all ages using all sorts of interesting media at her studio in Moyard Connemaracreativeworkshops

Dan O’Haras Homestead
Just outside of Clifden on the Galway Road is Dan O’Haras Homestaed, the Connemara heritage and History Centre. Connemaraheritage.com a tour of which will give you an insight into Connemaras past.

Connemara National Park
Connemara National Park has an exhibition on the Connemara Landscape and runs activities for kids in the summer, and there are lots of more outdoors things to do there such as nature trails, walks and a playground for a finer day.Connemara National Park

Killary Cruises
If you want an interesting drive head out towards Leenane Village and along the Killary Fjord where you can see the mussel rafts where the famous Killary bay mussels are grown. Just before you get to the village there is a slipway where Killary Fjord Boat Tours dock and you can go on a cruise down the Fjord and see the unique seascape that has been carved out by an ancient glacier. Killary Cruises
In Leenane Village there is an interesting museum dedicated to the Sheep and Wool industry in the area Sheep and Wool Centre along with some interesting shops and restaurants where you can sample the wonderful Killary Bay Mussels.
If it is really raining and you are around Leenane you should drive out to the beautiful Aasleagh Falls, which are just off the Westport road, these falls are quite spectacular and featured in the film “ The Field” and are well worth a quick visit on a rainy day in Connemara.
