RECESS: Lake and Mountain Views, Great Walks, Golfing, Marble, Central Position.
Highlight is the pilgrimage walk on the first Sunday of August every year for St Patrick
Recess is a village to the East of Clifden Town close to the N59. The village is situated on the edge of a beautiful fishing lake, Glendalough. The holy shrine of Mamean is nearby and is a perfect place to walk for both the beauty surrounding you and the sense of an era gone by.
The pitch and putt course in Recess is also worth a visit as you would be hard pushed to find a more scenic location for a game of golf. Recess is a well known angling resort and is famous worldwide for its green Connemara marble quarries. The marble quarries can be found at the lower slopes of the mountain ranges.Just past Recess take the next right, this will bring you along a spectacular drive through Inagh Valley to Kylemore Abbey or continue on the n59 and this will bring you on an easy drive to the Village of Roundstone and Clifden Town. Roundstone has superb beaches at Dogs Bay and Gurteen, as well as having some great pubs and restaurants.Cashel House hotel is well worth a visit especially to see its mature country gardens and enjoy afternoon tea. A feature of this area is Ballinahinch Castle and its well known fishery.
There are some super walks in the grounds of the castle, many of which are signposted, and the castle has a bar and restaurant. If you wish to spoil yourself a very special afternoon tea is available here.There are many other walks in the area, which is surrounded by the rugged hills of the Twelve Bens. Clifden is a short car journey from Recess, and you will find everything you need there, supermarkets, shops pubs and restaurants.
These cottages are in the Gaeltacht Region of Connemara. This means that most people will speak Irelands native language “Gaeilge”. But don’t worry they can all speak English too!
